How Many Bundles of Shingles Per Square?

Updated

Most architectural (dimensional) shingles come 3 bundles per square, where one square covers 100 square feet of roof. Heavier designer shingles may need 4 or 5 bundles per square. To find your total, calculate your roof's squares and multiply by the bundles-per-square for your shingle.

"Squares" and "bundles" are the two units the roofing world runs on, and getting them right is the difference between one trip to the supplier and three. A square is 100 square feet of roof; a bundle is a package of shingles you can carry.

This guide explains exactly how many bundles make a square, how it varies by shingle type, and how to count the bundles your roof needs — including the extras for starter rows and ridge caps.

Key takeaways

  • 1 roofing square = 100 sq ft of roof surface.
  • Architectural shingles: 3 bundles per square (the most common).
  • 3-tab shingles: also 3 bundles per square.
  • Designer/luxury shingles: 4–5 bundles per square.
  • Add extra bundles for starter strips, ridge caps, and 10–15% waste.

How to count bundles for your roof

First find your roof area in squares (total roof surface ÷ 100). Then multiply by the bundles-per-square for your shingle — usually 3. A 20-square roof with architectural shingles needs about 60 bundles, plus waste.

Don't forget starter strips along the eaves and ridge-cap shingles along the peaks — these are extra bundles beyond the field shingles.

Add for waste and accessories

  • Add 10% waste for simple roofs, 15% for cut-up roofs with valleys.
  • Starter strip: 1 bundle per ~100–120 linear feet of eave.
  • Ridge cap: 1 bundle per ~35 linear feet (or use cap shingles).
  • Buy all bundles from the same lot for color consistency.
