How to estimate drywall and supplies
Drywall is estimated by surface area. Add up the wall area (perimeter × ceiling height) plus the ceiling if you're covering it, add about 10% for waste and cuts, then divide by the coverage of your sheet size — 32 sq ft for a standard 4×8 sheet, 40 for a 4×10, and 48 for a 4×12. Larger sheets mean fewer seams to tape but are heavier to handle.

What a drywall job costs
The board itself is cheap; labor to hang, tape, mud, and sand is where most of the cost lives. Knowing the split helps you decide what to DIY and what to hire out.

Estimating tips
- Include the ceiling area — it's easy to overlook and adds up fast.
- Use larger 4×12 sheets on long walls to cut down on taped seams.
- Budget roughly one 5-gallon bucket of compound per 12 sheets.
- Hang it yourself and hire out finishing if you want a paint-ready wall.
